When I turned this piece in after hours exploring the deepest rabbitholes of the internet, I’d no idea it’d become the third most-read piece in the history of theMusic.com.au.
Considering the rock-centric site has a distinctly newsy focus, and the top story ever published there involved Evan Dando intimately detailing his drug-taking regime, this is some feat. Sadly, a server migration nuked the stats and some eye-opening comments, from crackpots who’d converged from well outside the site’s standard user base.
I still contend that the evidence is quite compelling – have a read and see for yourself.
And it ultimately inspired me to write a novel, The Drop, which takes the basic premise of the article and ratchets the conspiracy theories up several more notches…
