Lang Park is my favourite place in Brisbane. Henson Park is my favourite place in Sydney. I’ve only played on one of them.

My childhood dream of lacing up the boots before running onto Lang Park never did come to pass. I discovered music and part-time work and all the other things that torpedo football careers prematurely, including being small and not all that good.

I did get to play at Henson Park though, representing the mighty Sydney Sailors in the annual Community Cup charity Aussie rules match, and departed Sydney with a 4-0 win-loss record and two broken digits.

Most of my time at Henson has been spent on the hill, under the sinking winter sun, watching the Newtown Jets go around in the NSW arm of the National Rugby League’s second tier competition.

It’s the best way to spend a weekend arvo in Sydney. Here’s why.
